Denise Mina is the queen of atmospheric, all-consuming descriptions that draw the reader into a world of gritty crime in a Glasgow long gone. I felt as if I was back in the 1950s Glasgow my grandparents knew and I wanted more of it. I wanted to wallow in this old world of shady crooks, bent laywers and I wanted to find out more about the Burnside murders. This first chapter promises so much and had me hooked from the start. Now I’ve read it all i am so impressed by the skill Ms Mina shows in every page. The writing is tight and real and I felt as if I was there in the courtroom, on the streets and among the people. A masterpiece.
